Coverfield

Being on a cover of magazine is just great, don't you agree? One gets to wear designer clothes, put on nice makeup, experience the photo shoot and get Photoshopped when and where necessary.

magcover003
Schaue ich gut?

One could also almost feel like royalty when being featured on the cover of any fashion magazine. Or other magazines for that matter.

magcover002
Crumpets and tea made me.

What's better is if one gets to win some cool prizes AND get featured on the cover of the magazine, no?

magcover004
Sin City 2 just got better

Yes, this is an opportunity for you to win some cash, cool prizes and get featured on the cover of Seventeen magazine, Malaysia Edition, of course.

RevTour 2.0 Rocks!

A sudden tropical downpour was not enough to dampen the spirits of thousands of local fans or the elite surfers and skateboarders who took to the skies above the world’s largest man-made wave pool and a specially imported ‘half-pipe’ vert ramp during the Quiksilver Revolution 2.0 surf, skate and musical extravaganza held at Sunway Lagoon theme park, in Kuala Lumpur, on the weekend.

Two-time World Aerial Champion JOSH KERR (Snapper Rocks, Queensland, AUS) a professional surfer renowned globally for his aerial repertoire, landed a dozen massive aerials as he championed the visiting all-star cast who performed their tricks in front of nearly 40,000 people who turned out at the land-locked surf beach for the one day event, while thousands more clicked through to quiksilver.com to watch the Revolution 2.0 webcast live on the internet.

Though Kerr’s technical wizardry was lost on many of the spectators, most who had never before witnessed surfing first-hand, every attempt was greeted with cheers as people of all ages and nationalities surged forward in the Sunway Pool to get a closer look, or watched from surrounding vantage points, including directly above from the 428m suspension bridge, the world’s longest, that spans the park.

004postqsrt

Fellow World Aerial surfing Champion RY CRAIKE (Kalbarri, Western Australia, AUS) was also a big crowd favorite, as he rocketed and looped his way through the skies in front of the Sunway Lagoon volcano. Professional TROY BROOKS (Bells Beach, Victoria, AUS) was the only surfer to land his ‘Superman’ style airs, a move borrowed from the moto-x riders who grab on to the seat of their bike during huge jumps.

Indonesian WAYAN “BETET” MERTA (Bali) and Peurto Rico’s DYLAN GRAVES also flew high
from the artificial waves, assisted by the speed of a jet-ski which was used to whip all the surfers, water-ski style, on their boards across the chlorinated water and into the breaking waves.

A violent tropical storm cut short the final skateboarding demonstration which was scheduled to take place under lights, but the truly international skateboarding line-up consisting of Germany’s two-time vert champion SASCHA MULLER (Münster, Germany), Sweden’s JOCKE OLSSON (Malmo), the UK’s PETE KING (London), and Aussies RENTON MILLAR (Melbourne, Victoria, AUS) and TREVOR WARD (Moama, NSW, AUS) performed for two hours in the rampant afternoon humidity; pulling 540 degree spins, stale, lien and method airs, grinds and other super impressive tricks.

002postqsrt

At around 8pm, the unexpected occurred, as lightening lit up the sky and thunder boomed for nearly 40 minutes, forcing fans, athletes and ground staff to find cover where they could, while technicians cut sound momentarily as a safety precaution.

Then almost as quickly as it arrived, the storm passed and people got on with the party, dancing in their swimsuits under the stars and rocking out to headline music act from Bangkok, FUTON

The site of thousands of fans dancing and splashing water into the night air as the beats pumped from the huge soundstage, was awesome.

It is the second time the Quiksilver Revolution 2.0 has been held at the Sunway Lagoon venue, with the day/night surf, skate and music extravaganze being hailed as a huge success.

It is estimated in excess of 50,000 web users logged into the live webcast via www.quiksilver.com with hundreds sending in messages and email ‘shout outs’, some of which were read out live at Sunway Lagoon by hosts John Shimooka (Oahu, HAW, USA) and Matt Hoy (Newcastle, NSW, AUS), both former world-ranked surfers, hosts of the seven hour show.

003postqsrt
Musical support acts included: the super energetic Pop Shuvit now touted as Asia’s leading Hip Hop Rock band; the innovative combination of three world class scratch DJ's Fuzz, Cza, and Uno who together are The STYLUSTIKS; hip-hop artist Joe Flizzow and the group One Buck Short, who all helped rock the Sunway Lagoon venue and get crowds jumpin’.

“Our target market is the same as Quiksilver, it includes the youth who enjoy music and participate in the extreme sports field. The Quiksilver “lifestyle” matches our concept - we have brought the beach to the city, people do not have to travel if you want to go surfing. Yesterday’s event was a definite success, thanks to Quiksilver for choosing Sunway Lagoon, the turnout was tremendously successful,” said Mr Loke Kah Peng.

So What?

This had always been in my mind and a friend of mine recently echoed the same thoughts - how we chase different things in life thinking that it would bring us satisfaction. And at the end of day, the satisfaction is gone and we continue to look for new things to satisfy ourselves. Then this repeats all over again as if life is all about satisfaction. Is this the ultimate purpose of our lives? To come into this world, go to school, get a job, settle down (if we do), have kids, watch our kids grow up, get old and finally embrace death? Only to keep up with satisfying ourselves all over again?

Or is there another reason to life?

Looking back at life, I remembered how a close friend of mine had it all. He was top in his company, drove his dream car, had a lovely wife and two adorable kids. At one of our random chats, he would always ask the question, "So, what?", referring to the amount of wealth and happiness a man can acquire and would not know where is he heading to the next day. Well, he passed away the following week when he was out of the country for a company business trip due to a heart attack. This came as a shocker to those who knew him because he wasn't the kind that you'd figure a heart attack would take him away.

I guess when your time comes, your time comes, eh? But what strikes me the most till today is the following question "So, what?". I mean, really. So what?

In primary school, I wanted a bike and I got it. (It meant a lot to me that time) So what?
In secondary school, I wanted a computer and I got it. So what?
In college, I wanted a car and I got it. So what?
The endless chase of wants is never ending till today. Note: wants and not needs.
And I question myself, so what if I've gotten them all?

Come to think of it, nothing can satisfy us completely, even myself. It is as if an emptiness lives inside each and everyone of us, only to be filled by the things we desire from time to time. So, we say live for the moment and seize the day? It works but the fact still remains - that emptiness inside when we finally realize that life is not about how many figures we make a month or how many places we've been to among others. (Sure it would be nice to make tons of money and go to different places, nothing wrong with that! :p)

At the end of the day, it all boils down to purpose. If your purpose in life is to live your dream, then go for it. If it's to make a certain amount of money before you turn 30, then work hard for it and never give up. If the purpose of your dog's life is to be cuddled and to protect your family, then cuddle it all you want and let it protect your family when its time.

Realize one thing though, we can't know for sure what's the purpose of our lives because we didn't make ourselves. Only the creator knows what the creation is for, agree? So, does our parents know the purpose of our lives? Wait.....our parents had parents and they had parents too....go figure. =.="

Even then, when we have achieved so much in our lives, so what? Can that achievement be enough for us? Is it ever sufficient? When is enough, enough for us?

Being one of the most successful military commanders in history (he was undefeated in every battle), one must have figured Alexander the Great was satisfied with everything he had: wealth, women, glory and honor but on his death bed, he uttered these words: a tomb now suffices him for whom the whole world was not sufficient.Even for him, the whole world is not enough. Is it enough for you, wherever and whatever state you are in now?

By the way, I have a great job, enjoying great benefits that come along and I just got promoted. So, what? I still want more.

Taper Jean Girl

Although it was a physically tiring weekend, I managed to catch Cloverfield for free, thanks to a friend who had passes to the movie. It's one of those Generation YouTube movies where the entire movie is made up of random cuts and amateurish videography. Yet it is still engaging to watch at one point. Funny thing is, I noticed five couples walking out barely 30 minutes into the movie. Must have gotten them dizzy with the shaky framing and interrupted shots ala The Blair Witch Project.

cloverfield
Manhattan's very own Stonehenge couldn't attract enough tourists, apparently.

Catch it for yourself if you don't mind the jittery video work and have plenty of Panadols to spare, just in case. 6/10.

Cute Kids Aplenty

Saturday's 'Australia, My Playground' event had many activities ranging from a carnival (that went on the whole day) where families and their children can take part to win some cool Australian merchandise, a meet-the-fans session featuring Tweety Bird, Sylvester Cat, Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck to a fashion show featuring kids in Quiksilver and Roxy apparel.

It was also a competition between these kids where they stand a chance to win cash vouchers and exclusive products from Quiksilver Kids. Without further ado, here are the kids that you've been waiting to see!

Quiksilver Revolution Tour 2.0

It's that time of the year again where pro surfers and skaters come down to our beloved country for a day of skating, surfing and basically just chilling out. Yes, Malaysia's land-locked city of Kuala Lumpur is about to get a blast of boardriding culture with the upcoming Quiksilver Revolution Tour 2.0 bringing an international line-up of surfers and skaters to its chlorinated shores.

RevTour08GenericPoster
Tony took out the wheels for a smoother ride on KL roads.

On January 26, aerial specialist Ry Craike (Kalbarri, West Australia), top-ranked professionals Troy Brooks (Bells Beach, Victoria, Australia) and Josh Kerr (Snapper Rocks, Queensland, Australia) will be joined by Puerto Rican hotshot Dylan Graves and Indonesian star Wayan
Betet Merta (Bali, Indonesia) as they give a futuristic surfing demonstration to an expected 40,000 curious landlocked fans.

RevTour08GenericPoster
Catching sting rays had never been this fun.

Two-time German Half-Pipe Champion and world number 13 Sascha Mueller (Munster, Germany), X-Games and World Championship finalist Renton Millar (Melbourne, Australia), European Champions Jocke Olsen (Malmo, Sweden) and Jurgen Howarth (Berlin, Germany), and former world number three Trevor Ward (Moama, NSW, Australia) will entertain crowds on a special vert ramp imported from Australia.

RyCraike
Ry was the third man to walk on water since Peter.

The Quiksilver Revolution Tour 2.0 has not only assembled a posse of world-class surfers, and skateboarders but local and international music acts. The energy will be pulsating in the pool, on the ramp and at the stadium with Asia’s biggest music acts rocking the ‘Revolution’.

Cutting edge bands Futon, Pop Shuvit, Joe Flizzow and world class DJ’s the Stylustiks are all confirmed in the day’s star studded line-up.

DylanGraves
Dylan tried tuning his surfboard to a high E.

Now, where do I get them tickets? Hmmmm.

So::Graciously - January

Ok guys, here it is. I've decided to choose one of the earlier productions (way back in 2004) that I've been involved in for the youth ministry at Petra Youth Productions. The idea behind the stage-video fusion came to me after watching that year's MTV Movie Awards where one of the winners could not make it to receive the award and had to do a pre-recorded video for the audience before finally appearing in person on stage.

The best part (or rather the toughest to pull) of this play is the 'live-video-live' sequence where the actors are required to 'run inside' the screen and appear 'on screen' while appearing 'live' again, a few minutes later. Well, that's where practice comes in. =)

Perhaps this idea has already been done and seen by most of us many times by now?

Well, technicalities aside. I think what's more important is to bring forth the message of forgiveness and show how important it is for us to actually forgive one another.

So, I hope this will be useful for those of you who need some ideas in reaching out to others wherever you may be. Drop me a mail should you need any further information and I'll be happy to assist.

But really, would you forgive someone who has accidentally or purposely do wrong towards you or your family for that matter? To the extend of taking away your loved ones?

sg-jan-forgiveness

A Collection Of

After being in the youth ministry for quite some time, most of my hard disk space is taken up with a huge collection of data that includes pictures, documents, sermons, videos, presentation slides, lyrics, guitar chords and a whole lot more of other uncategorized files.

We all know that these files will remain in my hard disk for a very very long time unless some virus decide to take a peek at my files and render it useless forever. At times like these, CD-Rs and DVD-Rs come in real handy as an alternative way of backing up data. There's that.

So, I have decided to slowly filter, edit and re-produce the materials which I think will be useful for those of you out there who would like to get some new ideas and perhaps develop further on it for your youth ministry.

In the mean time, check back here soon for more updates and happenings on So::Graciously.

Just In!

30,000 tickets for the upcoming tour. If you follow the skate and surf scene closely, people like Renton Millar, Trevor Ward, Jocke Olsen, Ry Craike, Josh Kerr and Troy Brookes are coming down. That's only one third of them.

Meanwhile, surf over to
http://www.quiksilver.com/revolution2 for more event updates and happenings.

If surf and skate is not your thing, then come and support our local acts such as Pop Shuvit, lovemebutch and a couple more of great bands that play great music, live.

If local acts don't interest you, then just come for the sun, sand and sea. Imagination required, of course.

By the way, the tickets are not for sale but if you purchase a minimum of RM50 or above at any Quiksilver or Roxy stores, you are entitled to two tickets.

Or you could ask me.
