Goodbye 2008

While some of us may do it, most of us may not. It's the end of the year already and I decided to do a little recapping on what happened throughout the year. It helps me to track back certain areas in my life and to be thankful for what that's been given or taken. Hey, we all came into this world empty handed anyway right? So I guess its good to always be reminded that whatever we have now or have achieved up to today, can and may be gone for good at any point in time - hence do cherish and appreciate your current situation now.

So, to everyone who've played a role whether big or small in the following chosen events of 2008, I thank you and wish that 2009 will be a good and prosperous year for you. Here's a small gist of the second half of 2008 - a rather long roller coaster ride year that is :

Do Something While You Can

Most of the time, we feel smothered and that our thoughts never goes spoken aloud.

Many companies or even PR agents for certain membership or products claims to have an outlet for most subscribers or members to speak their opinions out but most of the time, personally it falls flat on deaf ears.

How many times have we written a suggestion and pop it into the submission box and it goes heard or responded?

I think one in a million.

But WiMAX has kept true to their words about wanting a proper relationship with their subscribers and giving them nothing but the best by truly acknowledging our judgment and thoughts of the public, mostly consumers of course, on just what are their thoughts on WiMAX's next location for their wireless internet connection.

Aside from feeling just a plain old customer having my cash taken, at least it gives me a sense of involvement with the development and progress of their expenditure.

WiMAX has come up with a fair voting system that can be found on their mini website, guiding us in simple instructions on how to vote.

They decided to leave it clean and trouble-free, without puzzling consumers with overblown bright colours or astonishing flashes and other gimmicks.

At least I know, I am voting for something that will certainly make a tiny bit of difference.

At The End Of The Day

Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reap what he sows. The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.

Galatians 6 : 7 -10

I Won't Be Home For Christmas

It's that time of the year again where people tend to spend more in the mood of celebration and all. While some may brag on the far away places they are going or simply just having a long list of things they want (read : want and not need), nothing wrong with all that but at the end of the day it all boils down to one thing - what really matters in life.

But of course, we'll save that for another time. None of us are perfect eh? Moving on, last weekend, me and the usuals had a simple pre-Christmas celebration gathering since most of us will be tied up already by Eve. Thanks to Joshua who had it all figured out, it was indeed good to see the faces that fill up my email inboxs everyday again over some good food in the vicinity of Desa Park City. Here's a video and some pictures from the yuletide shindig. Enjoy!

Remember to hit play, then pause for it to load entirely for smoother playback.

WiMAX Improves As The Year Ends

We all know and have heard much about P1 WiMAX.

Just the other day, I was having lunch with a friend and seated at the next table were a few people wearing WiMAX tees who I assumed are promoters.

Preparing to order for my dinner later that day, a group of students walked in with pamphlets approaching a few tables which no surprise to me, were information regarding WiMAX services.

Yes, WiMAX is the new wave of broadband for 2008 as we come to an end, and it is coming on strong.

Most of us have seen or tried accessing their website which already has a brand new face-lift. The bright and clean look they had adopted, makes it easy on the eyes to surf and find out information that we need.

While making everything as easy and accessible for users, they put in the extra effort to use the function of the Lightbox (a function most photographers or graphic designers uses to display their work)

I applaud their effort to educate users via their website on what's WiMAX about. Plus, I'd never expect them to use Lightbox. And speaking of technicalities, they should consider making a button's clickable area larger - not just the round grey arrow.

I personally especially like the support page they have as compared to various support pages I have come across that our local companies provide. I was able to locate a specific problem or question I had to assist me and it is as easy as 1-2-3 to click on the vital things I am looking for.

The one unique thing that WiMAX has on their website has got to be their announcement page, check this out :

It's so amusing that I would go in rather often just to check to see what are their latest updates on their announcements.

Maybe they might even announce humorous things of their services or even small feedback that they receive from subscribers.

Looks like WiMAX is going to end the year with a bang. Visit them today.

Eating In A Winter Wonderland

You'd probably seen all the decorations at malls, restaurants, retail shops, petrol stations and even at some mamak stalls by now. The red and green coloured decorations, the blinking lights, candy canes, snow flakes, reindeer and elves, nicely wrapped boxes and the gigantic trees. Yes, I'm talking about Christmas in Malaysia where everyone goes all out to celebrate it.

And if you've noticed by now, we Malaysians who love eating would probably spend a bit more for that dish after dish activity that not only satisfies the palate but also brings family and friends much closer to each other.

Having the opportunity to dine at Hotel Maya just recently, I'd have to say that they have certainly went the extra mile in their latest offer this yuletide.

001

002

014

Looking at my size, I'm certainly a man of meat. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy my veggies as much as I enjoy my meat but it is Christmas after all, and i just can't let go of the traditional roast turkey that I must have every Christmas.

Placed in between slices of lemon that gave the strong lemon scent from the plate, I scooped the line of mustard sauce and placed it on the turkey meat. To my curiousity, I asked what was the mustard mixed with and was told it had milk added into it.

006

Just as I mentioned earlier, I enjoy veggies so having a salad on the appetizer menu was something that made me feel healthy. Or maybe it was just self comfort that I wasn't overeating.

Having the best salmon of the lot, I tasted the salmon trout that was fresh with no tangy scent or taste detected.

The tiger prawns was a little salty however covered with sesame dressing and yuzu vinaigrette, it made it pretty delectable. Not forgetting the fried lotus root-this brought back many childhood memories when my mother used to make soup with it during dinners at home.

007

In a bowl of the thick soup that was a mixture of Sichuan soup along shreds of egg white in it, it was no wonder it was called as termed as sour and spicy.

This soup certainly enhanced the word 'fusion' for the tastes that was given interlaced with one another at the same time.

Adding to the fact that it had beef bacon in it,The bacon was crispy despite being soaked in the soup. Just talking about it makes me want to make a run for it for another hot bowl of it on a rainy Sunday afternoon.

008

Being extremely detailed with our food and wanting us to only have the best, the chef threw in a sorbet in the middle of the menu.

I almost finished the entire thing despite it being known to be sour, this lemon sorbet wasn't that sour that would made me pinch my eyes. It cleansed my mouth and taste buds so I could appreciate the upcoming main course.

009

Feeling chuffed up when the main course arrived, the lamb chop took my breath away the moment it entered my mouth.

It isn't any bias reason of the fact I am a lamb lover myself, but the fact it was cooked so well and meaty in portion being completely wrapped with Bainiku sauce (plum sauce to most people).

The yellow tail fish marinated with Teriyaki sauce went well with the risotto, it was a perfect combination that I could have never imagined.

010

Cleverly decided by the chef, we had noodles right after having fed with much meat. The Sansai Soba which most people have it cold was served in a steaming hot bowl. Sipping the soup carefully, the soup disappeared faster than the noodles in it.

011

Here's a secret that not many people would know, I am actually a sweet-tooth. Being served a huge plate of sweet treats, feeling like a kid again, gobbling up the ice-cream and tart.

If you think you have tried the best apple crumble tart, think again. If you have not tried the one at Still Waters @ Hotel Maya, your missing it big time. Especially for dessert lovers out there.

012

Ending the night with a cuppa, I sat back and munch onto the well decorated Christmas cookies that came at the very end of the eight-course meal.

013

004

005

All of this for two and also a room stay of 2 days and 1 night for Christmas Eve, this is certainly a good present to give to the parentals.

Granted it is RM980++ in a studio room* and having a breakfast for two the day of check-out, but you can't exactly put a price on Christmas presents now, can you?

After all, it is once a year, why not splurge and mostly why not on your parents?

Cash It In

I decided not to go for the PC fair that was happening this weekend.

Firstly, I had nothing much in mind that I wanted to get and it goes without saying that probably was trying my best to hoard some cash for myself.

Christmas is around the corner after all, I shudder in thoughts of my Christmas list this year.

But honest to goodness, my peers who acclaimed excitedly to me when they got back from the PC fair, the feeling I felt could easily passed as me wanting to throw myself in the middle of a busy highway.

Knowing that the P1 WiMAX's booth would be up having a 15 day free trial to whomever who decides to sign up on the spot not forgetting small little freebies that tends to get around during the PC fair.

But the ultimate freebie was the one where P1 WiMAX has gone the extra mile this time.

P1 WiMAX has created a booth called Cash For Grabs.

All you have to do is get inside the booth and money would be blown around you by air and you can just start grabbing as much cash as possible when you sign up with P1's WiMAX.

Every single note that you grab, is yours to take home!

Talk about Christmas coming early!

The Last Laugh Of 2008

You'd probably picked up by now that Timeout KL's Comedy Thursday gig is something to catch if you have not been to one. Aside from the monthly preview videos (that's only two including the one below) I churned here for your viewing and reviewing pleasure, it is the only stand-up comedy night here in Kuala Lumpur in such a scale that I know of (if there's others out there, do tell), that's worthy for that second glance.

CT - Dec08

Why of course, each comics that appear that night may not suit your liking or understanding, but you got to give props to them - for going up on stage to crack a joke or two in a room packed with foreigners, old-timers, newcomers and the odd walk-ins. And what's more, most of the time, these are locals which is why we should all the more give them the support they need. right? After all, they are there to lighten up our day through laughter for only a tenner.

As the saying goes "There's no business like show business" - which never fails to echo the general love for entertainment (think clowns and kids or men at strip clubs), check them out below and perhaps Comedy Thursdays would be locked in and something to look forward to for you in 2009.

Remember to hit play then pause till it is done loading for a smoother playback.

About 2 weeks back, I had the opportunity to work with Absolut Pitch in handling their videos for the OK! 3rd Anniversary - A Tribute To The Movies gig. Characters such as Hellboy and Ironman were among those who were being featured that night. Here's a short preview of the movie tribute section that happened at Zouk among other things. Pictures and another video to come in another post soon! In mean time, enjoy this one!

Taking Lead

People has been questioning about just which company provides for WiMAX in Malaysia, is P1 the only giant in this most sought after wireless monopoly or are there actually other companies that provides WiMAX for us?

It was told that our government has already predominantly set deadlines for the four WiMAX licensees to begin their services for the rest of us who has been anticipating for it quite some time. However, it seems only P1's been making various movements whereas, I do wonder what about the other three?

Just when can it WiMAX be utterly completely set to launch?

Aside from that little debacle that is going on within the business hand, P1 has a latest look on their website making it look far easier to the eye and way more attractive. The best part of it is that it is easy to check your coverage area by simply keying in your street name and it'll be spotted on the geographical map provided.

I may sound backwards but, that is pretty cool.

With its bright new clean cut look, the website is more user friendly now and attractive which makes me want to stay surfing around their site a little longer than usual.

I personally like the page where we could go and see which packages we could go with if we were to be thinking of switching to WiMAX.

The picture in there is pretty damn quirky.

Straight forward with no whiny explanations, P1 is certainly stepping it up.

Zouking About

Last Thursday, I had the opportunity to attend Zouk's Grand Launch Party (thanks to Adam and Yean for the media invites) and boy it was a blast. Despite the slight downpour in the early evening, the crowd did not stop pouring in as the hour drew nearer to 10pm.

One could say that some came to collect their membership cards or just to party the night away but clearly, everyone wanted to see the new rooms and be among the first to experience the revamped Zouk. Of course, there were also free flow of drinks that lasted about two hours for the thirsty ones that came.

001 copy
Retaining its dome shaped exterior, one can never miss this venue for clubbers along Jalan Ampang in KL.

Kicking things off at 10pm, the emcee had the crowd coming forward to the barricade for the opening gambit - where we were entertained by golden hair dancers from outerspace just before confetti was being shot in the air, revealing the all new entrance of Zouk.

002 copy
"You gotta move it, move it. You gotta move it, move it."

Making our way into the rooms, most of the crowd had a general 'walk flow' and being caught in between brought many to the place formerly known as the Main Room , or "Zouk" from now on.

Having the chance to see it for OK! 3rd Anniversary previously, I was rather familiar with the place that had the golden hair dancers from outerspace transforming into true blue booty shakers on the dance floor - entertaining the crowd as they get comfy on the sofas, seats and at the bar.

003
The room had commercial dance tracks spun by DJ Leonard T and Terence C.

004 copy
"Can I get a whisky please?"

After much ogling at the green lasers and having too much from the smoke machine, I was led to "Phuture" - the R&B and hip hop palace - through a secret entrance/exit door available at the VIP area. Being closed at that moment, I was ushered down to the bar area where people still coming in from the entrance like no tomorrow.

005 copy
DJ Luqe kept the room warm before DJ Goldfish made it hotter later that night.

006 copy
The four plasma TVs was a prominent deco-functional piece for Phuture.

Stumbling upon some friends from the past and present - I exited "Phuture" to collect my membership card. It's a rare sight that Malaysians would line up properly for anything but that night saw many people abiding to the 'line' that separated names alphabetically. Perhaps people mature over time. Perhaps the bouncers were there. Perhaps.

Got mine in a jiffy and shall be using it soon. Talk about efficiency.

010 copy
The "Welcome To The Pleasuredome" artwork was the eye candy for that night in that area.

I then stepped out for a breather and hopped over to the Terrace Bar to get myself some drinks. Insanely packed and blocked from going in, Kelz saved the day by getting some of us drink vouchers - with much thanks to Adam. I could not even get to Velvet as the human traffic was equivalent to that of the regular KL standstill. Another time maybe.

007 copy
The rain had stopped by that hour and the cool air blowing in was something you did not want to miss.

Now, if you remembered the old Zouk, the place formerly known as The Loft is now known as "Aristo" - the entrance in the form of a staircase located just beside Terrace Bar. Being a VIP-only area, the place had a more calmer feel with funky house music provided by DJ Shazz and a champagne bar to boot.

Spending some time there, I managed to get some finger food that went well with some bubbly I downed. An overall cool place to hang with your VIP friends, if you have any, that is.

008 copy
Decked with cool furniture and an awesome ambiance, Aristo really had the VIPs enjoying.

After a while up there, it was back to "Phuture" with my friends. None of us wanted to miss DJ Goldfish and besides, most of us preferred R&B anyway. So we scurried to the dance floor - drink in one hand, camera in some and partied the night away.

009 copy
Even the models came to party but they were upstairs most of the time.

011 copy
Of friends and familiar faces.

All in all, the new Zouk really had their rooms modified for the better, multiplied to cater to the different genres of performances and music styles and last but not least - for that amplified clubbing experience.

*Barsonic is left out until next week after the launch this weekend.

Time Out : On The Up - November - Finale

Okay, so the bands and videos are back and if you're wondering what's it all about, remember to check out the previous posts at the end of this post to get an idea, if you like.

This time around, let's get straight to the videos, shall we? I mean, no matter how much words are used to describe them - it will not do the band justice unless you've seen them live. And hopefully, by these one-song per band videos, you'll get a gist of our local talents and give them credit when its due.

Here's Alaling and The Kaya Koks, the third band up for Time Out : On The Up that night. Light and easy, their songs tend to take you on a dreamy journey at times. Enjoy!

They've also a short interview with Timeout KL's music editor, Brian Kwan - here. Check it out!

____________________________________________________________________

The last band for the night was Rendra Zawawi. Compromising of Alda Tan (bass guitar), David (lead guitar), Aidil Johan (sax), Stephanie (drums), Rohnie Tan (violin) and Rendra himself (vocals and rhythm guitar) - it was a solid tight set, I would say. I mean, backed with such an amazing group of musicians / friends - you'd have to see him perform live if you have not. But I don't guarantee the same lineup of musicians though, so try to catch him live if you can.

Without further ado, load the video below, get a cuppa and come back to view it - no regrets! Hope you enjoy!

I heard he will be playing with the legendary Shelley Leong (who's returning from the States) sometime this month at No Black Tie - remember to book your tables early if you're going.

To check out some of his other songs, you can also visit here.

Can't wait for the next one!
