Cheeseburgering At Zouk

With an offer some of us can't refuse - we celebrated Yatz's birthday a few weeks back at Zouk KL much to the liking and love of the birthday boy for all things clubbing - the booze, the music and the crowd.

Having experience Zouk a few times already after its' launch last year, the next best thing me and the usuals were looking forward to was the birthday package promotion that's being given when you add Zouk Malaysia as your friend on Facebook.

And indeed, we redeemed all 6 jugs of your choice of vodka or whiskey that night for free.

001
We may not be as privileged on the pockets as some of you are but its hard to ignore a good deal.

And if you know the birthday boy well enough (or hang out with him often) - you'd probably heard him rant about his 'cheeseburger' a lot and how much he wants one. Not that he can't afford it but its something he does rather randomly for the sake of it. You'd be surprised how such a string of simple words can cheer the day up much like that mumbling toddler that made you smile unconsciously.

002
So we got him what he wanted and forced him to finish it.

Of course, he thought the burger was his little gift from all of us - only to be surprised once again with some statement tees we bought for him as a whole. Glad he liked it very much. A toast and more drinks followed as the night was left waiting for DJ Goldfish.

003
A minimum of 10 pax is required to enjoy the birthday package that Zouk provides.

004
Yatz flanked by Jason and friend + Jen & Mandy.

005
The packed club with everyone grooving along to DJ Goldfish.

006
With the usuals.

Some of us left early to rest for work the next day while the birthday boy carried on partying with the others throughout the night. With free drinks and a place to chill along with some good tunes at KL's No.1 club - give it a go if your birthday's coming up next. We enjoyed and I'm sure you and friends will too.

Dancing To The Amsterdance

As the holidays begin to end, let's take a look at some stuff that happened a few weeks back. Armin was in town and me the usuals had the opportunity to catch him live thanks to Zouk KL. I wasn't really with them all the time as I was busy capturing the moment on video on an assigned task. However, the night was rather enjoyable as you begin to see things from a different perspective and not to mention seeing your friends dancing away and having a good time. For a taste of Armin's set, check out the video below :

001
With the usuals.

Remember to click play then pause for it the load completely for a smoother playback.

It's a wonderful experience being behind the decks especially when you get to see Sebastian work his magic with the house lights that night. Not forgetting the very accommodating DJ Terrence C who's always looking calm and cool no matter what the situation is.

The best part of the night was probably being able to move freely despite the mad crowd who kept on cheering his name at every intervals and the thumping bass that had my drink in the glass looking like a scene straight out from Jurassic Park if you remember.

003
"Put your hands up"

002Confetti right about 1am followed after a pyro-boost that caught the crowd by surprise.

004
Kelz & Jen captured beautifully in the midst of it all by Andy.

With 4 hours + worth of footage on tape, 3 drinks throughout the night, 2 other rooms for a stop by and 1 depleted battery - what more could one ask for?

A picture with the man himself of course!

005 copy
With the No.1 DJ in the world.

Heard that his outdoor sets are even more incredible. Hope I will be able catch it one day.

My Iron Lung

Finally, an ending to a busy week and the beginning for some much awaited holidays.

Been looking through the viewfinder for quite a lot lately.

001 copy

And if you do it often enough, you begin to notice things differently.

You begin to see what a world through the lens look like.

003 copy

You begin to understand how things that do not matter to you matter to others.

You find that time waits for nobody and if you do not seize the moment, it is lost forever.

002 copy

You realized that you've been living comfortable lives while many perish this very minute.

You think nothing of others and indulge in vanity and greed.

004 copy

And as you continue to live your mortal lives - thinking you are a god,
you find yourself slowly sinking in deeper and deeper
into nothingness.

What really counts at the end of the day?

Someone Almighty has the answers.

Do we even seek it?

Or do we stare down on the food on our plate each day and go...

005 copy

"The food so nice can?"?

Rumours - Chinese New Year Special

With Chinese New Year just around the corner - we hear about families having reunion dinners and how much the kids are so excited to be collecting ang paos from older ones. We also hear that many restaurants will be serving their special Chinese New Year menu.

And one of them happens to be a little nice place called Rumours in Desa Sri Hartamas.

Having the opportunity to dine there just recently, I'd have to say that they are certainly creative in bringing out the best taste in their latest effort for the Lunar New Year.

000

Sitting, waiting and anticipating the dishes over light chatter certainly did get our stomach juices flowing. Looking at the menu - we were first served with the customary Chinese dish for the Lunar New Year called the 'Lou Sang'.

The idea behind this dish is to have everyone at the table grab their chopsticks and lou (make) hei (up) : basically, it is said that the higher you lou, chances of your prosperity for the year will also be higher. (see pic above for illustration)

This time around, served with White Tuna* (as compared to the standard Salmon you get in other restaurants) - I'd have to say it was certainly something new as it did not taste like the classic Lou Sang dish. Not to mention that the white tuna was very fresh and the pomelo rations simply juicy.

002
*Salmon is also available

Being a fan of soup, the second dish was indeed a tantalizing one. One would probably guess the taste of it by simply knowing its ingredients but to my amazement, the Ginger Chicken Consomme did not taste that 'Chinese' after all. Served thermally hot and with a dash of a peppery hint and a deep fried chicken wantan, this is indeed the 'herbal looking - non herbal tasting' soup anyone would enjoy.

003

Being a man of meat - the following main dish caught my attention among the three (that was served simultaneously) due to the mouth watering bbq sauce placed on the beef tenderloin. With its soft and tender structure coupled with garlic buttered rice, broccoli and carrot sticks - this is the dish of the night for me. Not too heavy yet filling enough to prepare the stomach for dessert.

004

The second choice (of three) one could choose for the main course is the Pan Fried Five Spiced Duck Breast*. Looking like an extremely healthier dish compared to the beef counterpart - the duck breast had a fusion of tastes that one would appreciate as opposed to the normal duck meat servings one can get from any hawker stall. Tender and easy to chew - duck lovers should not be missing out on this.

005
*also served with broccolis, garlic buttered rice and carrot sticks.

The last among the choice of three is the Steam White Cod where fish lovers will be happy to know that this is available should one do not take beef or is afraid of trying duck meat. A little tangy (I guess all fish are) but balanced out with an even more so buttery rice taste and the standard choice of veggies - the white cod is something to look forward to this Chinese New Year.

006

Dessert was up next and knowing that the Chinese culture enjoys their fair share of Chinese oriented dessert - nothing can beat the Red Bean Pancake. Served with Sesame Ice Cream and some fruits - it did twist my taste buds from sour to sweet at times. The ice cream had a hint of peanut butter while the red bean pancake was slightly on the heavy side as a dessert. Not a bad thing though - I guess this is one dessert you should try it out for yourself and see.

007

At RM168+ for 4 pax, RM336+ for 8 pax and RM488 for 12 pax, Rumours' Chinese New Year Special is available from now till 9 February 2009.

Known also for their big selection of wines, one can enjoy a simply different and contemporary Chinese New Year ordeal this time around amidst the cozy setting, light and easy music and friendly staff.

001

Rumours is located at :

24, Jalan 28/70A Desa Sri Hartamas,
50480 Kuala Lumpur.
(block behind Souled Out, same row at Silveridge)
For reservations, please call : 603 2300 6650

Photographed! - Expatriate Lifestyle's Party

I've been doing videos for about 6 years now. Ask any of my close friends and they'd probably tell you that I've got a good thing going on in that area. You'd probably beg to differ but I'm still learning and there's a long way more to go.

On the other hand, if you've noticed by now - my blog contains more photos than videos. I guess that is only normal since photos are a good representation and a form of visual support for a story (or a blog post for that matter) one would like to tell. And talking about photography, I've personally started making my own photos only from 3 years ago. Anything before that are normally taken by other people.

Recently, I've landed myself a small photography job for an Expatriate Lifestyle event thanks to the good people there. Comparing it to the decent amount of videography jobs that I've had - it was indeed a good opportunity and something different for me to be able to shoot photos this time around. Held at Jarrod & Rawlins - here's some photos from that night :

You Can Play, Share And Touch Me!

Last Friday, Nokia launched its Nokia 5800 XpressMusic touch screen phone. Getting the invite (which happens to be a stripey arm cover - the kind you can see mothers wearing to fetch their kids from school in the afternoon) a week earlier, everything looks like its going be stripey on that day. And indeed it was.

001 copy
The teaser stage asking people to be around was up days before the event.

002
The people from Text100 working hard to make sure everything was ready.

It officially started around 730pm where a group of stripey youth shocked the crowd by appearing in front of the stage - and dancing around frantically along to the whatever music that was playing from the speakers at that time.

003 copy
After much prancing and banging skins - the phone was launched to a crowd of around 100 that night.

After launching it, Vlasta Berka - GM of Nokia (M) also announced the price of the phone which is RM1499 and mentioned that it will come along with 1000 DRM-free songs. Now, that's a bargain. So hurry up, go to your nearest phone outlet and get one today!

004 copy
Performances from various Nokia IAC acts were up next to entertain the crowd.

As we were getting hungry already, we proceeded to La Bodega for dinner and drinks - thanks to the kind people from Text100. Seeing that there was a big crowd of bloggers and food being served - it felt like it was another food review only on a bigger and cooler scale this time.

005
Yummy!

The difference between a food review and this one is that there was a few units of the phone being passed around for one to mess with. Although some of us among the crowd were already using the phone - we still felt privileged to have a look at it and test out all its functions amidst some really wonderful dishes and free flow of drinks.

006 copy
Ladies and gentlemen - the first signature pose of his royal shortness for 2009.

007 copy
Paella awesomeness!

008
As we dined - the stripey invasion continued on outside - bands, dancers - you get the idea.

009 copy
Top right : Texties David & EeVon making small talk with the famous KY. Thanks to them we enjoyed the night.

010 copy
The Nokia XpressMusic Family - my 5220 that I won , the 5800 and the 5320.

011 copy
With KY, Rames whom I met earlier & Suanie. How you'd like my stripes?

It was an awesome and enjoyable night thanks once again to the people from Nokia and Text100. The phone's a real steal and I'm on my way now to try my best in winning it! Wish me luck!

Doing What You Love

Sometime ago last year, I participated in a short film competition called Power & Grace where participants were to submit their shorts based on that theme. With very little time left from the closing date, I managed to put together a simple video and beat the deadline just in time.

I heard that many other film producers and film students took part - so I thought to myself that it would be a long shot to win anything at all (Open Category prizes are RM10k for 1st place, RM3k for 2nd place and Rm1k for 3rd place). Little did I know, days before the new year kicked in, I received a letter from the organizers telling me that I was shortlisted among the many entries.

And just recently, I attended the prize giving ceremony to check out what the pros did. I didn't think I would win or come close to any of them at all since I am still learning in this area. Take a look at my simple and straightforward entry below :

Remember to hit play, the pause for it to load completely for a smoother playback.

The prize giving ceremony was a rather simple affair where the shortlisted participants had a chance to see the winning entries and meet the judges of the competition which includes people like Hassan Abdul Muthalib, a veteran director, producer and filmmaker in Malaysia's film industry, Amir Muhammad, a filmmaker - who did not turn up and Nazim Esa, last year's winner of the BMW Shorties competition.

001
Wan Zaleha Radzi, a veteran Malaysian TV personality giving her speech as the organizer.

002
Shortlisted participants watching the winning entries of the competition.

003
Winners on stage - read about them here.

I didn't win any of the cash prizes but it was a good learning experience especially when you are chasing a deadline and working around the clock to finish that little piece of work. Of course, to get shortlisted is a good feeling as well and this spurs me on to continue doing what I love doing. There can never be too much of work when its something we love doing, right?

Oh ya, I checked with the organizers and guess what placing I got?

I came in 4th in the Open Category.

It's all good.

Do comment if you've watched mine.

NYE - Finale

Just before the new year kicked in, we gathered in a circle and played some games to pass time. With a simple mechanic that includes three words - "Bing, Bang & Wah" - the night was filled with laughter and bad coordination (due to the drinking punishment). Here are some pictures that illustrate what went on that night :

001
How often do you sit in a circle and play games with your friends?

003
Nadia was extremely loud that night but she was fast enough to avoid punishment.

002
The person to get 'banged' requires thos beside him / her to raise their hand and say 'Wah!'

004
Toasting to the new year at 12am.

005
And we continued playing card and drinking games throughout the night.

007
Being a year older, the birthday boy decided to down some like a man.

010
While other members of the floor started to see things in black and white.

006
Even the guys got wasted faster than the girls.

008
Soon enough, everyone passed out - on the floor and sofas.

Most of the people went home though - since staying over is optional (either you're too drunk to drive or times like these rarely ever comes, hence taking the opportunity). With barely enough of hours of sleep - some of them continued the day by going for Dim Sum and later on to a cyber cafe. One thing's for sure : the new year did start off with a bang.

009
Yatz with the Domokun - so wrong. So wrong.

May the Year of The Ox be with you.

KL''s Best (Only) Stand-Up Comedy Night

The first laugh of the year was indeed a good one. Thanks to Timeout KL, city dwellers have been enjoying their monthly dose of laughter in the form of stand-up comedy, aptly named Comedy Thursday which happens every first Thursday of the month. Now if you're looking for some good stress-reliever kinda material - Comedy Thursdays is the event you'd might want to check out the next time around. And to kick things off for 2009, the January's installment of the said event turned out to be rather good with a crowd of 115 - laughs and all.

001

What's even better compared to the previous ones is the new seating arrangement that somehow managed to turn the first floor of Little Havana into a little mess hall / canteen-style - you laugh - I laugh - we laugh louder scenario that fits perfectly for KL's only stand-up comedy affair.

002

And to top things off, the stage area has been reduced measurably - making way for the crème de la crème of all seats : the soft white thrones that puts oneself at point blank distance with the comedian throughout the night. What an awesome idea, eh?

003

010
Chi Ho hosting the night while Yugi speaks about the credit card slots.

Costing only a tenner (with a printed coupon available from Timeout KL's website) - it is no wonder that by 8pm, you'd probably see a line at the entrance already. Now if you're interested to get really good seats - here's a tip : come early with your mates, have dinner there and you're good to go.

006

004
Familiar faces brighten up the room.

005
Some travel all the way from other cities for that joke that must be heard in person.

With good food on one plate and friends on another, time passes swiftly and before you know it, the comedians are all ready to take on the night and give their best performance to the waiting crowd.

007

011
Alfred talks about how Ip Man is cool while Sri shares about his experience living abroad.

Here's a little snippet of the latest Comedy Thursday that you'd only get to see here exclusively on Get A Cuppa. Do check it out!

Remember to hit play, then pause for it to load completely for a smoother playback.

008
A typical Comedy Thursday night - around 8pm. Show starts at 9pm though - imagine double of this.

009
The crazy bunch of friends who's ever ready and excited for a good laugh.

012
Regular comic Zac Kamal giving some advice to the boys - newcomer Ian on road conditions in KL.

They say laughter is the best medicine and I couldn't agree more. If you've not experienced Comedy Thursday - then you're missing out on KL's best treat for stand-up comedies ever. And no, Raja Lawak does not count. The February's installment looks promising already from what I've heard - why not dropby and check it out for yourselves, eh? After all, it's only once a month. And this one's making you laugh for sure.

013
2009 sees an extra additional 'cctv-style' camera footage for that added visual dynamic experience.

NYE - Part #3

And the games has begun. While waiting for the birthday boy to prepare himself (somehow he went missing upstairs for a moment - I swear we saw nothing of him for a good half an hour) - some of us gathered to play none other than the Ring Of Fire.

001

Its a simple game where you pick a card and do the task each number on the card is assigned to. This includes having all the girls to drink or choosing people to down some liquor - to name a few.

Oh, not forgetting to torture the birthday boy too!

002

003
Snacks were being served every now and then thanks to the good hands in the kitchen.

Soon enough, the birthday boy revealed himself for all to see and everyone gathered around and did the mandatory.

004
Cake-whoring.

005
Aged and graduated - welcome to the grind!

And what follows after seems to be the general practice these days - the mandatory (another one of those) group photo. And having so many people from different parts of your life means only one thing : more segregated group photos according to connection, blood ties and how you met each other according to Facebook.

006
"You go to the same university, shared notes and perhaps even hated each other for scoring higher"

007
"You met each other at Aaron's birthday + NYE party and probably too drunk too remember each other"

008
"You met each other at Aaron's birthday + NYE party and probably will see each other again this year"

009
"You known him but he probably forgot who your friends are they are random these days"

010
"You know him from Emotions Anonymous - support group for retarded and crazy whackjobs"

After much mingling and adjusting who stands where - we all got our four to the floor for some late night countdown action - coming up next! Stay tuned!

Meet My Friend, Zouk!

They choke trying not to laugh at me when I told them that I secretly do the running man.
Or well, try to do the running man move.

It may come as a surprise to most people but I do dig certain trance tracks though I've got to admit that I'm not so well versed with that genre.

No guesses where I'll be checking out this weekend's event.

333

I heard so many ravings about him; I have yet to be blown away.

Being told that this event would cost me a RM120 since it was a big scale event, it wasn't something unexpected.

I prepared myself to be paying that much for any future upcoming events until I was told about this.

I'm a man of information and I especially like to share it with people. Who knows who might just be able to benefit from it?

Recently a friend of mine told me to approve a club that added me on Facebook as a friend.

Seeing as it was Zouk Malaysia, I found no hesitation in adding them.

After adding them I started to realize that I did the right thing by adding them because being a FRIEND with Zouk Malaysia on Facebook, I get tons of privileges that are headed my way for night out there.

These are the far-fetched stuffs I get to have by adding them as a friend on Facebook :

* Have my own permanent guest list for every Friday/Saturday night with a jug of vodka/whiskey for me and my guests. Thank God for that, nothing spoils a night out when you're parched and it helps my wallet to save money.

zouk2

* Free birthday party to be held that comes with 6 jugs of vodka/whiskey but would need to have a minimum of 10 people. Easy-peasy, now you guys can have a birthday party at Zouk without worrying much.

zouk1

* The best part of all is that we get free entry into Main Room and Bar Sonic! Aside from the pumping music, you get to amuse yourself with their cool plasma's and attractive LED wall design.

zouk3

Check out the video below as well :

It's an offer that is so simple that you just cannot pass up.

All you have to do is merely search for ZOUK MALAYSIA and add them as your friend on your Facebook account. (Not group, alright?)

Just notify the people at the entrance that you are a member and you'll be able to party on.

Except for special events and public holidays though, your friends wouldn't be able to go in for free.

There will be redemption coupons upon members signing in for your free drinks! And I'm telling you, it is alcoholic.

Zouk has always been the place to be seen and to be at for any major functions.

Now with these fantastic perks by adding them on Facebook, I'm glad I added them!

It's your turn now!

NYE - Part #2

While waiting for the others to arrive, we mingled and listened to music provided by the birthday boy's trusty computer. Food such as sandwiches and light snacks were also provided for the hungry tummies. NYE - Part #1

It was the end of the year and everyone was looking forward to it. Having a friend with a birthday smacked right on New Year's Eve isn't something to shout about, but at least for him - it mattered to most of us. Besides, we rather spend some quality time with each other at the brink of the new year compared to being stuck and squashed in some club or on the streets.

With party planner Thomas on one hand and the birthday boy on another - they decided to rent a decent suite at Duta Vista for the day.

Boasting around 1,600 sqft - the place was fully air conditioned and came complete with every furniture and fittings one needs for a weekend getaway or a house party especially when you do not want to clean up after.

Another view of the dining and hall which includes the bathroom.

There are two rooms located upstairs - each with two single beds and about enough space to fit six more people on the floor - all fully carpeted and equipped with a connecting bathroom.

Untitled-5
Humans sold separately.

And being a house party - some good souls provided the booze which came in all shapes and sizes.

Untitled-4
Picture taken hours AFTER the countdown and drinking games.

Some of the early birds waiting for others to reach.

Untitled-8
Sitting, waiting, wishing.

Part #2 up next!
