I’m A Musicon Celebrity Thanks To Maxis Broadband

Okay, so Nuffnang's at it again. If you remember the Wild Live Party last year - this is pretty much the same gig with Maxis - just that the theme's bent on music this time around, if you've noticed the billboards and pillar wraps in town.

music-bash_banner

There's probably gonna be a whole lot of 'musician celebrities' walking around on that day from every genre and I bet its going to be a colorful one - which reminds me of the clothes Jimi Hendrix wore back in the late 60s - funky psychedelic stuff.

005 copy
Guess the colors on his top.

Well, of course he was known for his exceptional use of the guitar not only as an instrument but as a piece of art. And no one does it better than Jimi if you've seen him play.

Now, I've been playing the guitar myself for over 15 years and I would probably impersonate Jimi for the bash - everything from top to bottom but I'd probably be strumming on an acoustic guitar rather than an electric one. Somehow, the warmth sound from an acoustic guitar is something that I am comfortable and have stuck with for many years. The electric for me is for a another level altogether but that's another story.

004 copy
Taken during one of the random jamming sessions.

And on how I would being treated as a celebrity? I guess like any other normal person out there. Call me unimaginative or boring but the truth of the matter is that celebrities are just regular people like you and me at the end of the day (or show). We breathe. We live. We bleed and we all die. So why the need to be treated extra special, right? We're all flawed. Nobody is better than the other. Think about it.

On another note, if you're thinking of looking for some costumes for the party - you might wanna check this out :

001

Having a wide range of costumes (both ready made and customizable) - you may just find the right choice to dress up and go as a musician celebrity come Saturday. Of course, you can save up by creating your own costume or borrowing it from friends but if you've not decided on what you want to go as (or probably too lazy to create your own) - give AP a ring or drop by their store and they might just surprise you.

002
Everything from Catwoman, Ironman to Hulk and even the Predator costume can be found here.

003
Wigs, head gears, masks and other funky stuff are also available.

There's about 4 days left to the party so hurry up and give them a buzz (014-643 3401) if you're interested. I guess I'll be seeing some of you there. Till then! *twang*

Chimichanga Love

"Where to eat later?" was the common question among me and my friends during my uni days. It would have been yours too if you knew how far we would travel for lunch just because the construction site right in front of our uni has not been completed.

That was ages ago. Fast forward to today and we have this eatery / office building known to many PJ folks now as Jaya one.

If it wasn't for curiosity, I would not have thought much of the place. Being invited to watch some friends play for the open mic session and celebrating another friend's birthday at Brisik last year has certainly changed my views of the place.

Now, if you're a regular there, I'm sure Frontera Bar & Grill would not be foreign to you. The place serves authentic Tex-Mex food and if you're looking for a different affair or an alternate place to have your chips and salsa - this could just be the perfect choice.

017 copy

With a cozy corner meant for dinners, Frontera does not fall short of space as the place also boosts a huge U-shaped bar for those who love their drinks.

019 copy

And having almost any brand of alcohol one could think of, drinkers and new converts alike can have a common ground to bond, chit-chat or just plainly watch some Astro on the LCD TV provided.

020

Being invited recently to review some of their best servings, I would have to say that this is
my first time experiencing Mexican food right here in the city.

Meeting the owner, Larry - some days ago for their first anniversary celebration and having a bite or two from their snack servings got me really excited to finally sit down and have a go at some authentic Mexican fare.

First up was the Agave Margarita which is made with agave nectar instead of the standard sugar syrup we get in many restaurants. It is served with a full 45ml shot instead of a 25ml shot that most clubs or pubs use. The best part of this margarita? No hangovers the next day. You could go on drinking glasses of this and feel nothing the next morning. Certainly the best margarita in town from my experience with other pubs that serve them.

015 copy

The Chips & Salsa was up next and this time around - we had two other 'salsas' to go along with it.

The Chili Con Queso is a cream based salsa and is recommended for all you cheese lovers out there. Served warm, the aromatic Monterrey cheese is certainly a winner in the cheese dip category and is no doubt a great salsa to start with. Just remember to ask for it separately.

The Chili Con Carne is a meat based salsa on the other hand. Served with onion toppings - think of it as an upgraded version of your regular minced beef but with way more flavor and oomph to it, you could even eat it with bread or plain noodles.

012 copy

013 copy

014 copy

Barely through some chips - the Frontera Nachos made its way to our tables and boy, did it look like mini pizzas from afar. Not to be confused with those - the Frontera Nachos is actually nachos topped with cheese, cut chili and some tomatoes + lettuce as garnishing. A true appetizer - this one's certainly a crowd favourite, if not, mine. Goes well with some beer and game of football too.

002 copy

Following closely behind is the Taquitos de Pollo. Looking very much like our 'popiah' or love letters - this crispy feat is made out of Frontera chicken wrapped in corn tortillas and served with green sauce (salsa verde) and sour cream. I managed to grab a few of this to cool things off when I was still suffering from the heat of the Habanero.

011 copy

Next was the Habanero Chicken Wings. We all love chicken wings, don't we? Well, with some Habanero BBQ sauce and cilantro ranch dressing - the wings kept my taste buds wanting more and more of it - so much so, that it was the fastest dish to finish. Do not be afraid of the Habanero name in it as this wings are not spicy and is great for kids to chew on.

003 copy

Chimichanga was next on the list. With a name so cute you cannot resist, the Chimichanga is made out of homemade flour tortilla topped with Chili Con Queso and diced tomatoes. On the side, you have refried beans and some Mexican rice that makes this dish an all round main course. Tasty as ever too.

The only difference with the Tex Mex Burrito is that the former is fried and latter, not. Both servings comes with your choice of chicken or beef inside.

004 copy

010 copy

Chicken Tacos is the next Mexican dish that filled our table that night. With the same sidelines as the Tex Mex Burrito - the taco is filled with seasoned beef or shredded chicken topped with lettuce, cheese and tomatoes. Do take note when eating tacos as we all know how its fillings tend to slip out the other end when we take a bite. Taste? Unlike any other localized Western servings here. You'd have to try it for yourself.

009 copy

Had enough yet? Well, not just yet. The Frontera Beef Ribs has got to be the best beef ribs around. Why do I say so? The beef is so tender and juicy - it reminded me of chewing on tissue - only to be meat that is light and savoury. Served with mashed potatoes together with tomatoes, corn and onion - I would order this one again the next time I dropby Frontera. Not to be missed!

005 copy

Cajun Fish and Chips is next and probably the safest around. You can never go wrong with it in terms of the taste and it would be ideal for kids. Besides, fish is good unless you are not a fish lover. Nothing to shout about here but you may want to try the fish with some Chili Con Queso.

006

Last but not least is the Chili Cheese Burger (with a choice of beef or chicken). Having the same sidelines as the Chicken Ranch Sandwich - I preferred the Chicken Ranch Sandwich over the Chili Cheese Burger. Maybe I've been taking too much salsa at that point - the dry chicken became my next best friend. Both looking like the ultimate burgers - these big guns are certainly worth it if you're gonna pay a heavy price for 'burgers' - knowing what's out there in the market. Not a let down - go for either one of these and you're set for the night.

007 copy

008 copy

If you're thinking of its portions (which you can certainly see by now how big it is) - just remember that Frontera serves big portions so sharing is an option you might want to consider when dining here. Besides, its fun to share with your loved ones every now and then.

018 copy

With the bar set for catching up lost times with friends - Frontera is certainly a place where good and new memories can be created and re-lived over and over again.

021 copy

022 copy

Yes, new and 'hot' memories too.

001 copy

Oh, if you love coffee and alcohol - give the Patron XO Cafe a try. No guarantees you can wake up the next morning though.

016 copy

I'm still thinking of having more of the Chili Con Carne at the moment. Perhaps I should get the recipe and make some myself at home some time. Oh well, for now - Mexican food anyone?

023

Come on, go for it at :

Discover, Explore or Extreme

DiGi recently launched their broadband service and being a loyal user of DiGi of 10 years - I was happy to see that they have finally jump on the broadbandwagon. Got invited to the DiGi Broadband briefing that happened on the same day as the launch itself at Good Evening Bangkok, 1 Utama.

000

After some light mingling and waiting for about an hour - things kicked off with the DiGi broadband team explaining to us what was the event all about while dinner was being served. We were also called to introduce the person next to us and talk a little about the best feature of that person.

001

Soon enough the DiGi Broadband team took over the stage and talked to us about their new service. Some quick pointers that I liked and hope to see more of that night were : 1. Likely average speed - at least we know what we are paying for. 2. Plug & Surf within 3 minutes - hassle free to get connected. 3. More GBs - one can never have too much if you're a heavy user. 4. Discover, Explore & Extreme packages - affordability for different types of users.

002

My only experience with mobile broadband service was with Maxis and that didn't turn out so well - so I stopped and join most people in the WiFi club - whether its at cafes, restaurants or even at the mamak.

003

I want to give DiGi a try but my old laptop is acting up and I don't think it will survive any much longer. Been using it mostly as a medium for file transfers nowadays.

Oh wait.

001
Winning a brand new laptop after a game of 'Spell It Out' using random alphabets picked from a bowl.

I might just do it soon. We'll see.

*a big thank you to those who helped that night*

Fantasy Comes Alive!

Guess what's happening this Thursday?

You gotta check this out :

008

Ok, so I let my imagination run wild for a moment there. But ain't the picture above a dead ringer of Zouk Club KL? Especially the dome on the left and the scattered trees.

But wouldn't it be so cool if it looked like that?

Oh well, we all know how much Zouk can surprise us when it comes to things like this, right? Remember their grand relaunch? Or when the World's No. 1 DJ came down?

Yes, the club turns five this Thursday and boy, it's gonna be great.

001

With a theme loosely inspired by Disney's Fantasia, Zouk has decided to turn every room into something that only exists in your imagination - or at least something so surreal and fantastic, it'll blow your mind away. Get started at the Enchanted Playground with free flow of drinks before the main dish.

007

Then head on over to the Fun House for a 'bouncing-off-the-wall' party hosted by Lapsap and Terrence C playing the hottest electro, mash-ups and trademark bootlegs. If you've never been to Zouk (the room) - you've gotta check it out for its awesome LCD panels and light rays.

002

If electro's not your thing, I'm sure R&B is on your playlist, if not all the time. And who can miss Sky Kingdom especially when DJ Goldfish, Luqe, Ray Rox and MC Point Blanc are dishing out what they do best - high flying beats!

003

Feeling a little old for Phuture? Missing the tunes from your youth in the 80s? Then head on over to the Deep Blue Room where DJ Leonard T and Alex will take you back in time with a special performance of an 80s medley. Time to walk down memory lane!

004

For the VIPs, the Golden Bubble awaits you as special guest DJ Gregoire Pagnoux along with resident DJ Shazz will be tearing up the decks with the latest electro and house just for your golden tushies.

005

Last but not least, rockers shall unite in The Music & Magic Room where Twilight Action Girl will be taking charge as you headbang and skip along to KL's first indie karaoke room. Be sure to have sufficient amount of drinks for this one.

006

So, if you've never been to Zouk Club or are a regular there, this one's not to be missed!

If you think their member birthday packages are good, then this party is gonna be one for the books for a long, long time.

Details of the party are as follow :

Always The Smarter Choice

Last Saturday we were at Friendster Cafe, some Nuffnangers and me,
It was a Bloggers Nite Out and I heard it was free,
With the invitation, I came to know that its organized by DiGi,
I was greeted by their banner when I entered, as you can see.

001 copy

A few steps inside and one can see a giant MSN user interface,
The kind that makes you go 'whoa' like your first time in space,
It was empty and we were given a marker to fill our 'place',
A pretty awesome backdrop, for the event, in this case.

002 copy

Feeling hungry, we were first served some finger food,
There was also a table full of prizes looking good,
Soon enough, dinner was ready, we were prompted by some dude,
Familiar faces around, all smiles and hugs was the mood.

003 copy

004 copy

The dude's name was Jonathan, the emcee for the night,
He welcomed us to the free flow too besides having a bite,
And after an introduction by DiGi, they turned off the light,
To show us their commercial, it was funny alright!

005 copy

Then came the session where the DiGi team gave us a demo,
On their new MSN service for mobiles, everything one needs to know,
Shortly after, games were played and some gave it a go,
Answering questions easily and winning prizes like a pro.

006 copy

Some of us were aiming for other prizes, we had to wait,
The next game needed one male and one female for a MSN debate,
Yatz and Cindy were picked for the battle, head to head,
Nicknamed Angel & Devil respectively - it was great.

007 copy

In between these games, we also had a lucky draw,
Where numbers were called and winners to the floor,
To ensure that everyone had fun when they walk out the door,
Those included Chris, Satya, Thomas & Kenny - the lucky four.

008 copy

What is MSN without the emoticon faces we often use,
Hence was the next game - with great prizes one couldn't refuse,
It was Kim, Huai Bin and Robb - time to let loose,
Their expressions was so funny - I swear we kicked off our shoes.

009 copy

010 copy

After another round of monkey faces and those in between,
The lucky draw came back, it was written on the screen,
More friends won themselves things - could be the lucky gene,
David, Kate and Yatz were some of them that I mean.

011 copy

012 copy

013 copy

So if you're a DiGi user and want to have a continuous online voice,
Their RM3 per month MSN service is something to rejoice,
With 2 months free trial till 16 May 09, its time to make some noise,
Switch to DiGi if you can - cause its always the smarter choice.

014 copy

015 copy

Cooking Up A Show

If movies have trailers that gets you excited to catch it at the cinema, how about a band preview just before one of KL's biggest music festival takes place?

cosmickitchen

Yes, catch Dublin based band, Cosmic Kitchen as they give you a teaser of what’s to come. Being one of the international acts that’ll be performing at the 2nd Sunburst Music Festival, Cosmic Kitchen is not exactly all international per se. Two of the members have Malaysians roots.

Siblings, Aminah Dastan on vocals and Salim Dastan on guitar are not stranger to the local music scene. Though sister Dastan has a degree in environmental biology, she’s very much a music girl at heart. She has collaborated with numerous local talents such as Julian Mokhtar, Atilia, Albert Sirimal and Chan Kum Loong, among others. The half Irish vocalist also has an album, ‘Caravan Trail’ under her belt, released in 2005.

Brother Dastan on the other hand has dabbled in various music-related activities such as co-founded the Tugu Drum Circle, a reggae band, Layan Sound System and organised a party ‘Float’.

Now they are back in town with their multicultural seven piece group serving up jazz, funk and reggae. Cosmic Kitchen will be sharing the stage at Sunburst KL with acts including N.E.R.D., Erykah Badu, Korn and many others.

The Dastans will share the stage with their band mates, bassist Jose Carlos Flores, keyboardist Dahmian Izydor, guitarist Dustin McMahon, drummer Khalile Vial and Simon Wall on flute, soprano and tenor saxophones.

There will be two opening acts for the night and they are Bo - Bedroom Sanctuary and 40 Winks. Both will be performing a 40 minutes set before the main act, Cosmic Kitchen takes the stage.

Don't miss this chance to see them - up, close and personal before this Saturday at Bukit Kiara.

Signs

Untitled-1

There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea. Men will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken. At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.

Convert Your Treasured Memories Today!

Gone are the days of using a film camera and snapping carefully each time to avoid wastage on badly composed pictures. With a digital camera today, one can happily click away and delete pictures without worrying too much on developing them later on. But then again, how many of us out there really develop our digital pictures anyway? Saving them and viewing them on your computer is fine but what if your hard disk decides to take the plunge just when you have uploaded your latest collection of holiday pictures?

May I introduce one solution among the many out there - Canonfoto.

Being invited to meet the people behind it recently, Canonfoto is the latest effort by Canon Marketing Malaysia in putting the power to create personalized memories in the form of a photobook in the hands of consumers.

001

With the option to download the software into your own personal computer or by using the Canonfoto Kiosk (available at all Canon Concept Stores and authorised photo studios) - consumers can now create their own photobook from the various themes and designs with ease.

002

Once completed, they can choose to send their photo album online to Canon or submit it to the authorised dealers for a professionally printed final photo book within 10 working days.

005

If you think that the Canonfoto software is too much of a hassle to use - you might just want to give it a shot first and see how easy it is in reality to create your own photo book. Here, I present to you the basic steps of using the Canonfoto software :

004
The autofill function is the best option should you want to save time in inserting your photos.

004a
Very basic photo editing functions are made available but is optional in the creation of your photo book.

Wondering about the quality of the photo book? Wonder no more as each Canonfoto photo book is printed using Canon's commercial printer - the imagePRESS C70000VP. The printer is Canon's latest addition with high quality gloss print and offers a quality close to offset printing. With other functions incorporated - it is the best choice for the Canonfoto service.

008
You should have seen the size of this printer!

Canonfoto photo books are available in four different sizes (8" x 8", 8.5" x 11", 11" x 8.5" and 12" x 12") and four different cover types which includes the soft cover, debossed cover, spine cover and dust jacket option.
Good variety if you ask me. What's more? Once your photo book is printed, Canon will deliver it to any destination in Malaysia without extra charge as delivery charges are already included in the final pricing list. Now imagine sending a photo book to your family or friends as a surprise to them. The perfect gift for memories, ain't it?

003
KC giving us a tutorial on the software and your photo books will be delivered in that pizza-like box.

So go crazily creative with it! Download the Canonfoto software (you might want to check if your computer has this - if not, install it first) and create beautiful photo books of your wedding, graduation, birthday parties, holidays, memoirs, photography, pets, anniversaries and maybe even your own magazine today.

007
Can't wait for mine to be delivered!

Across The Ocean

Been busy with rehearsals lately.

001

Storm Chasing Is Fun

Remember that film Twister starring Helen Hunt & Bill Paxton? The one where they chase tornadoes? Yeah, I bet you remembered the cow scene or how the tornado lifted up houses and crushed them into obscurity.

Well, about an hour before today's rain and flash floods that caused the frustration of many - me and the usuals had a little 'storm chasing' of our own ala the movie. Caught in the traffic along Jalan Ipoh after a journey down to Kepong for business reasons - the dark clouds became our friends as we sit buckled up in boredom.

001

Hovering over us like in the movies ID4 or WOTW - these dark clouds soon produced lightnings which to our delight, excited us to try and capture these atmospheric discharge of electricity with a camera.

My first attempt after much tinkering with the camera settings, as you can see here : failed.

002
The red trail of light comes from the building.

So, I continued shooting in burst mode with a long shutter speed to see whether we could capture this work of nature that scares the bejesus out of Marley.

And I managed to.

003

But I was not satisfied
with the results, as you can see it was quite a small fry.

We carried on along Jalan Ipoh as traffic started to flow smoothly after a few minutes - giving us more open space and a wider sky view.

Here's my third attempt at it :

004
Darn! Those trees!

That did not made me give up. Remembering similar photos in the National Geographic magazine, all I wanted was a full fledged lightning hot enough to fuse sand into glass channels and to be kept as a photography experience.

So I continued shooting and shooting - and after a few minutes of sitting, waiting, hoping and wishing - with the right amount of wind, friction, atmospheric pressure, car speed, bladder level and restraining power of the seat belt - I succeeded.

005
It was purplish in colour with more than 15 mini electrical 'branches'.

We cheered in unison when it came out on the camera's LCD display.

See, getting caught in a traffic jam with a storm ahead isn't so bad after all. Just make sure you are not the one doing the driving at the same time if you intend to do so.

We soon reached our base station at KLPac and adjourned individually and safely back to our homes before the flood.

Oh well, all the best to your storm chasers out there and here's to more of such fun-filled experiences!

The Three Musketeers

You'd probably tie the following brand to a certain group of people - at least that's what I noticed back in high school. Last weekend Adidas celebrated their 60th birthday - me and the usuals were there to check it out and to go for LapSap.

001

Held at none other than Zouk KL - the event brought me back to my school days where we would come to school just to show off our latest black market Adidas hoodie or Superstar soles. And that was already good enough for us to be the talk of the school canteen as we flash them stripes early in the morning while waiting for the school bell to ring.

007

From the reggae inspired stripes of red, yellow and green to the funky bright colours of electric blue and warm pink - it was the No. 1 'add-on fashion' label to our already boring school uniform. Others include Cantona 7, Alien Workshop, Piranha, Maui & Sons and even Jun-Saito if some of you remembered your Kemahiran Hidup years clearly.

005b

And we all know that during our school days - only a few of us could afford to buy the originals. So, the majority of us only had fakes to show off. But still, it was the brand we were wearing that mattered. Who cares whether it was fake or not. As long the stripes were there, we were 'there'.

002

The tagline that night somehow made me laugh to myself as I monitored the crowd of hopefuls coming in their fake Adidas outfits. 'Celebrate Knock-Offs' would probably work better instead. Oh well, who even bothers with such marketing lingo anyway. Everyone's there for the free flow of booze and some eye candy.

004

The event started off with a dance performance and a brief intro and welcome message by Henry & Daphne, the two MCs of that night. A fashion show of the latest line from Adidas followed suit. Same old same old.

005
Spotted a familiar face on stage.

005a
DJ Goldfish and the winner for the Vespa Design Competition.

003
Colourful Vespas on display.

Birthdays mean different things for different people and I wonder what it meant for the crowd when the cake was brought out in celebration. Of course for the brand to be here for over 60 years is quite an achievement - but what does a birthday of a brand in Malaysia really mean? Stability? Boleh spirit? I do wonder.

008

I guess it doesn't really matter much cause to consumers - if the brand dies off, we'll probably go with the next one or continue buying the fake ones off the street shelves. Coming a long way will only mean everything when one finishes the race as it was intended to.

006

Oh well, high school ended soon enough and the brand followed through till my college days. It's really tough to forget this three striped wonder due to the impact it has made. And I still have my old school Adidas jacket from the yesteryears when it comes to sports related fashion brands. Talk about brand recall.

At the end of the day, it just reminds me of how we should impact lives and make it the right one at that. Nothing beats knowing that your life has brought a good change to others. Agree?
