Under The Radar

The company recently kicked start the fashion week at Midvalley Megamall and if you've been a trend follower of the industry here, you'd probably been to one of the shows that ran for about 2 weeks in mid April. No guesses which company I work for.

001
The centre court.

Being the biggest surf lifestyle brand here in the country - you've gotta admit you can't possibly miss the mountain and the wave logo - although surfing isn't part of our culture. For the Summer/Spring collection this time around, it was all about retro colors from the 80's and grunge attitude from the 90's.

009
Male models all ready and set to go.

Many people from the industry were invited - writers, fashionistas, company owners, suppliers, VIP's and not forgetting bloggers. Here's a little shout-out to them for making it that day :

Bottom L-R : Sandra, Jess, Serge & Joshua.

Photographers David & Aaron.

Thanks guys and girls! You might wanna check out their blogs on their take on various topics ranging from their life happenings, events, food and pretty much anything under the sky.

If you love the brand - you can always be a fan or drop by one of the stores to check them out.

Hamartia

Man calls it an accident; God calls it an abomination.
Man calls it a blunder; God calls it a blight.
Man calls it a defect; God calls it a disease.
Man calls it a chance; God calls it a choice.
Man calls it an error; God calls it an enmity.
Man calls it a fascination; God calls it a fatality.
Man calls it an infirmity; God calls it an iniquity.
Man calls it a luxury; God calls it a leprosy.
Man calls it a liberty; God calls it lawlessness.
Man calls it a trifle; God calls it a tragedy.
Man calls it a mistake; God calls it a madness.
Man calls it a weakness; God calls it a willfulness.

What is this mysterious thing, so downplayed and on occasion actually denied by man, but utterly denounced by God?

A Time For Everything

001

There is a time for everything,
and a season for every activity under heaven:

a time to be born and a time to die,
a time to plant and a time to uproot,

a time to kill and a time to heal,
a time to tear down and a time to build,

a time to weep and a time to laugh,
a time to mourn and a time to dance,

a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them,
a time to embrace and a time to refrain,

a time to search and a time to give up,
a time to keep and a time to throw away,

a time to tear and a time to mend,
a time to be silent and a time to speak,

a time to love and a time to hate,
a time for war and a time for peace.

Eating Groovily

A friend once asked me, "Where can I enjoy good live jazz music coupled with dinner and some drinks?" I answered him, "That groovy place down at Sri Hartamas - the one at the junction you know?"

That was about a year ago and about 2 years down the road since its opening in 2007, it is still without a doubt that Groove Junction is the place for some jazzy nights away from the city.

001

If you're well versed with the local jazz music scene, you'd probably heard about this place or probably been here to watch your friends play. Built around the theme of live music - the place looks sophisticated but at the same time, feels homely.

Thanks to Joanne Yeoh and Jennifer Thomas - me and the usuals got together recently to have a take on their new offerings. For those who have not been there, you'll be greeted by a medium-sized bar upon entering. The rest of the space in front of the bar are for dining while the stage is at the very end of the room (see last pic below).

002 copy

Starting out with a drink, I'd have to say if you're not a fan of mint, you can opt it out but if you are - then this one really wakes up the tongue. Drink at the top for minty pleasures, below for a mango punch or just mix it up (the way it should be) to reach a whole new level of refreshing.

Mango Mint Ice Tea copy

Next up was some tapas. If you thought that garlic butter or kaya goes well with your baguettes - think again. This eggplant with olive oil coupled with chili herbs is a definite must-try. Served with generous amounts of sliced Baguette - it will probably convert non eggplant eaters into lovers in no time. Of course, there's some chilli to deal with, but if you can take the regular curry - then this is nothing for you.

Salsa Berenjenas copy

The Crispy Oyster Mushrooms was next. Now if you like something light to go with beer or your drinks - this is it. Looking very much like fried chicken - some even said it tasted like it. So, how about some then? And mind you, these mushrooms are huge, which makes it a popular dish among patrons. Definitely taste as good as it looks. I'm a fan already.

COM copy

Moving along, we had the Grilled Asparagus with Hollandaise sauce. This 'crunchy' veggie is the way to go if you love your greens. Even if you're not a fan of vegetables - the sauce combo makes it all worthwhile for a good bite.

GA copy

Unto the 4th serving - the Lemon Fish Fritos is actually deep fried fresh fish nuggets served with tartar sauce. You can have this as an alternate among other fried things as it goes down well with beer too. Its small size is also perfect for kids, if you're dining with the family.

LFF copy

Apples, celery, sour cream, nuts and mini chicken chunks is what we had next in the form of the Chicken Waldorf Salad. A great appetizer for those on diet - you can never go wrong with this even if you're not. Just expect a tinge of sourness. Great dish to have right before your main course.

CWS copy

Before the main course was served, another drink came in the form of this blueish liquid called the Lemon Grass Caviar. Smooth and light on the throat - if you like Vanilla, then this is one you cannot miss. Personally, I would love to go back and have more of this wonder.

LGC copy

An additional dish came along - in the form of Fish Fritos again. This time around, served with tomato salsa and some chili padi - I'd have to say I enjoyed this (tapas) the most. In fact, I think it's the salsa that made it whole. Now I want to eat anything fried with this salsa. Hot and sourish - you'll be missing a lot if you give this a miss.

FFTS copy

Pasta anyone? The Penne Arrabiata was up next. We had the vegetarian version of it though. Containing eggplants, black olives, basil and sun dried tomatoes in spicy pomodoro sauce - penne lovers will certainly come back for more of this. If you're looking for something slightly lighter for the tummy - then this is the perfect dish. Don't worry, it is not as spicy as it looks but rather well balanced in its taste.

Penne copy

A popular variation of pasta - we had the Seafood Spaghetti next. Done in an Olio style and with a selected variety of sea creatures - give this one a try if you have a really empty stomach. Well balanced in terms of taste - this is another serving that I would love to come back and have.

Spagh copy

The Mains was up next and we had the Lamb Shank. Being a fan of mashed potatoes and lamb - I' d have to say it tasted real good especially when its coupled with the rosemary sauce that comes along with it. The side salad serving is not too bad either. Tender, juicy and very mouth-watering, worthy is the lamb.

LS copy

The Pan Fried Seabass has so much in it. First, the Seabass is tender and smooth. Then the lemon butter sauce completes it. To go with that, the tomato salsa is the bomb. And to top it off from under - mashed green peas. And there's not even a hint of tanginess in all of these. A keeper dish for fish lovers this one!

PFS copy

Dessert finally came and we had Groove Junction's signature - the Warm Chocolate Lava. Topped with a strawberry and vanilla ice-cream, the chocolate base contains warm chocolate lava love that's set to melt in your mouth, if not on your spoon. A simple and not too heavy dessert I would say. Sweetness level : 6/10.

WCL copy

Another signature was the Crêpe Suzette (with flaming Contreau). A typical French dessert, served with caramelized sugar and orange juice, we had the opportunity to see it flambéed right in front of our eyes (which is normally done) by one of the bartenders. Soft, thin and swimming in sweet syrup - it is no wonder these Crêpes have been around since 1898. Sweetness level : 8/10.

CZ

Last but not least, we all had the Mocha Martini which I thought was pretty interesting since my last experience with the Patron XO Cafe. A good blend for both coffee and alcohol lovers.

MM copy

Groove Junction used to open at 5pm but now, their open for lunch as well from 12pm - 3pm (Western Italian Cuisine). Set lunches are at RM13 and happy hours are from 12pm - 9pm, every night at RM10 (mug) or RM38 (jug). Certainly a nice place to go with friends and loved ones after a hard day's at work for the food and live performances at 10pm.

I Ordered A Beer With Just A Tweet

Just got back from the Nokia E75 + Email event held at Saffron, Solaris - Mont Kiara. They've got some pretty good Mediterranean food - especially their tapas. Check them out here.

001

Although the place was rather small for a medium-sized event - most of us that were there managed to get a chair to ourselves. Thanks to the good people over at Text100, we we served generous amounts of food and dessert before the event.

002

After dinner, Mr. Bambos Shaikaris, the marketing manager for Nokia Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei took the stage and had a little discussion with us about email. I realized that most of us there also had more than five email accounts (excluding work mail) when asked for a show of hands. I guess the traditional one email account doesn't really apply anymore to the world these days especially when there's so many email providers out there - and how we tend to use each account for different reasons; personal, side business, storage, spam and so forth.

We also watched a commercial on the Nokia E75 before Mr. Glenn Cha, the product manager for Nokia Malaysia took over and explained to us the evolution of email and the revolution that the Nokia E75 has done in integrating various email accounts into one.

003

A few units of the Nokia E75 were also being passed around. I managed to order a bottle of beer with just a tweet on the E75 thanks to the many tweeps that were present. I guess one can now order food or drinks silently with Twitter without disturbing the process of an event. Way to go, tweeple!

004

Many thanks to Ee Von for hooking me up and David for the beer. Follow me if you like - you'll probably get random announcements for the brands I work for on my sane days - heh! Oh ya, the Nokia E75 retails at RM1950 and comes in three different colours. A very cool 'business oriented' phone I would say. Go get one already if you are always on the go and want to receive all your emails from different accounts on one platform.

One Hit Wonder - The Holograms

Robb from Nuffnang asked me one day whether would I like to perform at an upcoming event with my band. I immediately said yes without hesitation and without any plans on how we would turn out on the day itself. Calls were made, emails sent out and soon enough, I decided that it would be an all blogger band.

Knowing some in the blogsphere that were already in tune with songs and music, I envisioned the band to be all about spontaneity and togetherness. After all, cooperation, understanding, passion and selflessness is key when it comes to ad-hoc decisions such as these.

I looked forward and I knew its gonna be a good one.

001

Now, you'd probably read (and seen photos) about the event already somewhere in the blogsphere - if you haven't, I'll be providing some links below.

Seeing that time was not on our side and with the collective help of the band members - we locked in the practice dates and decided on the songs we would present that night. A quick check with Robb says that its better to play some cover songs (not like we had any originals written anyway) so that people can recognize them and hopefully enjoy the event better. And so that was what we did.

With one guitar and the occasional keyboard and electric guitar in tow - we gathered mainly at two places to practice weeks before and had one final practice at a local music college thanks to Joshua and Anne.

002

That went on for quite sometime and I must say that it was a great experience working with the band members. Those that did not sing regularly - sang well and those that did not play regularly - did awesomely good too. I guess with determination, guidance and a pinch of confidence, things in life will somehow work out, eh?

As the date drew near - we gathered on Gmail to discuss our costumes, seeing that the event would be a 'costume' based one. Some ideas include going as country musicians (easiest to pull off) and as a punk rock band amongst others.

A quick call to a friend from Absolut Pitch soon confirmed our sponsored costumes as Jem and the Holograms. Many thanks to them - we were made colourful that night (something which I fancied a lot and thought it was the perfect match for the event if you've seen the colour combos provided by the new Maxis Rocks On! USB modems).

003

The day soon arrived and there we were early in the morning - putting on our costumes and having our makeup done. Adjustments and attachments were done there and then - improvisation too at times. Joshua who initially had a different wig was given the one with the Mohawk styling while Andrew got the star on his right side on his face. Kelz and Jen also got their makeup done and within hours - we were all ready.

004

And David (who was looking very J-Pop-ish) was ready to shoot himself given the kind of costumes and do we were in for the night, but we didn't really bother much - it was all for the fun and spirit of things. I personally thought David looked like Bobby Lee from MadTV.

005

I remember it was raining outside when we were on our way to Maison. Luckily the event was an indoor one, so that did not dampen our spirits. We arrived safely and completed the missing parts of our costumes (head gear and pants mostly) while I got to setting up the sound system.

After much hassling with wires, jacks and power cables - I realized that there was a missing link for the entire system to work properly. It was the RCA connectors (the red yellow white ones that comes along with your DVD players) according to the resident DJ, Reggie. I personally thought one TRS connector would solve the problem. Calls were made to Nicholas and Aaron and thanks to them - the RCA connectors were acquired.

But after testing it, DJ Reggie realized that the TRS connector would do. I guess we all make wrong judgements from time to time. Oh well, we got to practicing one last time with the full audio system and that was it.

006

During the arrival time - most of us were going around on our own and meeting other bloggeriends. We also gathered outside one time to take a group photo for keepsake. How often would you be seen in such costumes for such an event like this, eh?

007

While the people from Nuffnang was busy with the registration of attendees and whatnot, Maxis managed to convert certain areas of the club into mini-stations where one can record a music video or play music-themed games like Guitar Hero on the PS3 in conjunction with their campaign.

008

You'd probably wondered why wasn't there any drums since it was a 'music' event. Maison's stage will give you the answer. The elevated DJ section was also a tough one especially when you're having a band to perform, hence the mixer positioned on the same level as the stage as you can see. However the band that consists of three backup singers, one bassist, one keyboardist and two guitarists managed to fit though. If The Arcade Fire can play in an elevator, I'm sure we can too.

009

The event soon started with Liang setting the mood as the emcee while Robb took care of the overall show. You can read the coverage of the entire event at some of this places :

May
Jeff
TianChad
Hitomi

010

Here we have The Holograms (technically Jem wasn't the lead, haha) on stage. With a whole lot of mixed feelings (and wrong keys played) on stage - we just hoped that everyone enjoyed our performance.

011

The setlist was:
1. Howie Day - Collide
2. Bryan Adams - Back To You
3. Def Leppard - Two Steps Behind
4. Carefree - Belaian Jiwa

012

The now defunct Holograms consist of :
1. Andrew (golden hair) - electric guitar and vocals
2. Joshua (Mohawk man) - bass and backup vocals
3. Kelz (pink drenched) - backup vocals
4. Jen (blonde ambition) - backup vocals
5. David (blue wig) - backup vocals
6. Anne (leopard redhead) - keyboards and backup vocals
7. Myself (white wig) - acoustic guitar and vocals

013

So much for bringing the late 80s back - only a handful knew who were we at first glance. I guess times do change and lost are the classics from the past. Revive them at all costs!

014

Even Bob Marley was there as a testimony to the classics. Or could it be Julian Marley - one of Bob's 12 children? Hmm. Whatever it is, the dude snagged a PS3 for best dressed.

015

Nuffies weren't spared the stage too - they sang "Let The Music Heal Your Soul" as sort of the closing song for the night. A good choice for the night.

016

It was indeed a colourful and a musically enlightening night. I mean, how often do you get to see Pink, Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, Eminem, Bob Marley and John Lennon on stage?

017

No, the fun did not stop there. Most carried on partying like it was 1983.

018

After packing up and making sure our G-strings were okay - we proceeded to a nearby mamak for drinks and food with some bloggeriends. I remembered asking them to go on first as I had one last thing to check before leaving the place.

I went up to DJ Reggie and thanked him for monitoring the sound the entire night. And then I asked him, "RCA or TRS?"

He answered, "It doesn't matter, it was all good."

019

Indeed, it was all good.

020

* Many thanks to Robb and the peeps from Nuffnang for the opportunity to play
* Picture credits : CincauHangus and MohawkMan

* Much love to The Holograms

A Porky Affair

I’ve said it many times and I’ll proudly repeat it again I am a man of meat, and of course judging from my size, I’ve ate a lot of meat. And veggies too might I add.

So accepting an offer to dine in one of the best places – or so I heard from many people that serve the best meat is something too tempting that I just can’t refuse.

001

With a rather clean and modern with a hint of elegant touch, the settings at Jarrod & Rawlins rather brings you to a serene place with the music playing softly in the background as you dine there. You can also choose to dine at your pleasure either indoors or outdoors in the brightly lit garden that I know most girls finds it romantic, I have to say it does look quite enchanting.

inside

002

Aside from the dining, there is also a bar upstairs where people could just grab a beer to chill the night away after a long day’s at work, or catch up with some buddies or even have a guy’s night out to just basically blow off some steam.

003

As you enter the restaurant hidden with the image of an old bungalow, you’ll find yourself coming face to face with a huge deli counter on your right selling a huge range of cheese and meat and on your right would be imported beers and drinks along with frozen patties of meat and pies in a huge fridge.

004

005

Jarrod & Rawlins has the deli theme concept where you get to choose your own type of meat or cheese at your own choice and setting them to the exact amount you wish to have. They also sell the frozen pies that can be found in Cold Storage which I never tried purchasing before and I was told that all of the food is self-produced. Awesome!

006

We started our dinner with two salads for our appetizers side by side.

We had the Nicoise salad which had one of the softest fresh tuna meats which was grabbed by my peers as I unconsciously finished up the red tomatoes that was freshly cut in.

nicoise copy

The Caesar Salad was pretty alright in my opinion, because let’s be frank, how different can a plate of salad get? The only difference was that this Caesar salad didn’t taste as dry as some I have tasted before.

caesar copy

We were able to choose our very own choice of sausages and meat at the deli counter before adjourning to our table and after a rather lengthy discussion from the group in choosing what we wanted; we came to decision of having these choices :

Streaky bacon
Lamb and cranberry
Pork and herbs
Pork Dynamite Chili
Pig in blanket
Beef range

sausages copy

Just looking back at that list is enough to make me slobber once again, even when the platter of sausages arrived, the bacon was crispy however wasn’t too crunchy that we could taste the juicy parts of it. I liked the Pork Dynamite Chili the best.

Next up was the Anti Pasta dish which could be foreign to most people but everything in the tiny bowls on the plate was familiar to me as I put each of them in my mouth in enjoyment, although I have to say the sun dried tomatoes were rather sour in my opinion. But I think most of the time sun dried tomatoes tastes that way.

antipasta

For cheese lovers out there, the next dish is going to make you salivate in a heartbeat.

The Portobello Mushroom with melted cheese and bacon is a gem among the choices in J&R.

shrooms copy

The melted cheese was heavenly that you’ll be scraping the plate to get the ones that got stuck on however I found the mushroom slightly bitter but hey, maybe it’s just my level of bitterness and it’ll be good for others.

Up next was the Steak and Kidney Pie which I saw a couple of times being sold in Cold Storage outlets and I was fortunate enough to try one now. I enjoyed it but it may not be the pie for everyone as the strong kidney aftertaste that is left on the tongue can be overwhelming for some.

pie copy

My time finally came when we were served plates of meats being placed right in front of me.

The lamb shank was enough to fill my tummy the moment I laid my eyes.

lambshank

The gravy was thick and no doubt it was one of the better lamb shanks around with its tender meat without leaving that tangy taste that most lamb shanks does.

Right next to it was the Beef Tenderloin where the meat was juicy and I extremely enjoyed it, a must have for all beef and heavy meat lovers out there as the portion is also just right for a single person’s order without having to add on anything else with it.

beef

The king of meats came forth and I was stunt with its appearance as the Pork Knuckle landed on our table.

pork copy

I left all shame behind as I started being polite cutting pieces of meat for my fellow peers and when they weren’t watching and was done with their portion, the utensils in my hands was discarded and I held the huge bone between both my hands and ate like how a true meat lover does.

Ending the tasteful night with a plate of cheese ranging from Brie, Picon Blue, Camembert and Machengo cheeses, it was my first time having a small cheese tasting session served with yummy crackers.

cheese

My personal favorite has got to be the Machengo one so do go try this cheese platter for your dessert choice if you want something different!

With a heavy and happy tummy as we said goodnight to each other, I am definitely bringing my family here the next round and let them enjoy what I just wholeheartedly enjoyed.

Love Crucified Arose

Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him. The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.

That's Just Twitterific!

With Twitter being the 'in' thing nowadays, I always wondered what would happen if it was on print? Of course we will be getting news from the collection of tweets the day before but wouldn't it be so cool for those out there who do not have Internet access or the time to follow people to be able to 'follow' the various individuals on Twitter? Oh well, it could look like this though :

On a separate note, I got featured in this month's Junk magazine thanks to the Nuffnang Community of bloggers. In return, I wrote a review for an album. Check it out here.

featured

You'll probably see some familiar faces from the Nuffnang Community of bloggers as well in other Freeform publications like KLuE and TIC. I just hope that the really talented ones out there are given a chance to be discovered and featured some day - not just those that are deemed to be popular among a certain group of people.

Free Supply of Ice-Cream Till May '09

I'm sure all you Malaysian ice-cream lovers out there have a MyKad, right?

Yummy!

001

So what does your MyKad have to do with ice-cream?

Oh well, if you're a fan of ice-cream, then you're in luck. New Zealand Natural Malaysia is having their ice-cream giveaway from 6th April - 29th May 2009.

The catch?
Every Monday, the year will be revealed on their Facebook page. If you are born in that year, all you need to do is present your MyKad to any outlets to redeem a free Junior single scoop (for the first 50 customers at the particular outlet).

What's even better?
You also get 50% off for purchases of a large ice-cream (3 scoops)
- unlimited purchase within the redemption time.

What's the redemption time?
Monday - Friday from 5pm to 7pm. Valid at all NZN outlets except Bangsar Village and Queensbay Mall, Penang.

What's this week's year?
1979 - if you're born in this year, have an ice-cream filled week!

______________

So, what are you waiting for? Go on and give your friends some ice-cream love if you haven't! Just make sure the picture on the MyKad matches your face.

Visit here for more info.

I'm Not Fat, I'm Festively Plump

It's been a while since my last banana leaf rice expedition. Today's destination was Sri Nirwana Maju and boy, it was good. The lady boss was also nice enough to let us reserve some seats.

The dude's back from Manchester too. Good to see you man.

Caught up a bit over coffee and then some.
