All My Failed Attempts

Just got back from KLue Urbanscapes 2009, the city's all-day creative arts festival held at KLPAC. Met so many familiar faces I swear the entire world was there. Here's some pictures from the event :

009
Hardworking Eevon was there too.

005
The X Marketplace for the online shopper in you.

004
Faces : Suresh & Sam, Kelz & Jen, Steph & Ben, Jen & friend.

002
Cow on rooftop.

006
Caught Rendra at The Box.

008
Zouk's Barsonic tent all ready for 'em Barsonic-ers.

001
The extended X Marketplace area.

010
Poet Stories during the open mic session.

003
Some paid tribute to the King of Pop.

007
Enjoyed Furniture's set at The Sunset Disco area.

011
You'd probably see a lot people posing here.

With an aim to bring together communities and participants from the fields of music, arts, fashion/lifestyle and film under a single banner to showcase the best of the local scene - I'm pretty sure it did that today. Left early though just before the rain. Heard it got better in the night. Oh well, nothing I that haven't seen before. Hoping to see it on a bigger scale in the future.

We All Need That Drive Somehow

I'm a big fan of external hard drives. Gone were the days where your internal hard drives are sufficient for storing all your files, wouldn't you agree? Come on, let's admit it - we all have our own collection of data for entertainment (or work) purposes. And with such data being so frequently accessed, it is no surprise that we should back them up or simply store them on a separate drive altogether.

I recently had an external hard drive delivered to me.

002

Yes, it was the Seagate FreeAgent XTreme 1TB that was designed for maximum performance. The box reads that this drive is able to store up to 320, 000 photos or 240, 000 mp3s or 1000 hours worth of video. Now that would come in real handy when you've got less than 5GB left on your internal hard drive. Delighted to test it out, I unpacked the box.

003

I find that Seagate's way of arranging the contents in the box is rather simplistic much alike to its predecessor drive that I won sometime ago. You can read about that here. Here's a picture of what's inside :

004

You get the regular items for setting it up - power adaptor, USB cable, Firewire cable, quick start guide, base stand, rubber feet and of course, the drive itself. Looking very sleek, I hooked it up to my computer and within seconds it was ready to be used in its full plug and play glory. You can also choose the option to install the Seagate Manager for better organization, privacy and control over your external drive if you like :

002a

I'll go over my likes and dislikes about this drive at the end of this post. Ready and all fired up - I started to transfer my files (USB 2.0) over and had no problems doing so. A file size of 1GB would take about 10 seconds to transfer. Good enough speed for me.

For those out there who are more adventurous, there's also the pretty standard Firewire 400 connection (which promises up to 400mb/s transfer speed) and the uncommon eSATA connection (up to 3GB/s transfer speed) which I have yet to try out as the cable is not included.

006

So here's my lowdown of the drive :

Likes
- Sleek external design (you can lay it flat on its side or use the base stand)
- Decent performance throughout
- Quiet and cool during operation
- eSATA connection
- Easy-bundled software
- Power saving after 15 mins of idle time
- 5-year warranty

005

Dislikes
- eSATA cable not included
- Unfriendly two-pin power adaptor (for Malaysian power outlets)
- No power button (although drive turns off when ejected)
- No Firewire 800

007

With three interface options and a lengthy warranty for a fair price (RM560) - I would say that this is a decent external hard drive if you're looking for something that has a good balance in every aspect. And remember, there can never be enough external hard drives if you're the type to backup important files throughout the years. So, why not get one today?

It's Really Nothing

001

I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.

Graduate & Celebrate

It's been awhile since I've attended a friend's convocation. You know, the kind where you wait for them to exit the hall and fling their mortarboards into oblivion. Yeah, so it was Joshua's special day and me and the usuals met up with him for a bit earlier this morning.

001

I remembered not attending mine for some urgent matters years ago but going for this one does bring back a lot of memories. Feel so old these days. Anyway, congratulations once again man.

002

Just got back from Jessica's & Evelyn's birthday bash at Velvet, Zouk - thanks for the invite girl! Coincidentally, there was another high profile after-party a room away which had the place packed to the brim. You'd probably read about it in the blogsphere already.

003
David couldn't take it anymore and decided to top up his drink with quite a bit.

005
Which ended in him having the hots for Chris at one point. It was crazy, I tell ya.

004
A group pic with the birthday girl - the other one passed out quite early.

Music was good as always and I couldn't believe it's been that long already - after getting jiggy to the tunes from the 90's. I swear I felt like a teenager once again at one point only to stop dreaming after my hips felt the weight of the world while trying to do some Hammer time. Bleh. Oh well, many happy returns to both birthday babies!

Media Screening : Land of the Lost

Will Ferrell - a name common to all of us who love comedies. From A Night At The Roxbury, Old School, Elf and Anchorman to Talledaga Nights, Blades of Glory, Semi-Pro and Step Brothers - it is without a doubt that you'll probably be laughing at one of his movies.

In his latest film, Land of the Lost, Will plays paleontologist Rick Marshall who is reduced to working as a teacher for children at the George C. Page Museum until he meets Holly Cantrell who urges him to finish his tachyon amplifier. When he does, they go to the Devils Cave, a roadside attraction, hiring its tour guide Will Stanton. Marshall activates the tachyon amplifier triggering an earthquake, and the three end up in a parallel universe having lost the amplifier.

Indigo A-Go-Go

Third time there. First time was an eye-opener back in 2004. Read about my second time here and here. Third one's a blast. Don't think I'll be heading there again in a long time.

001

Been real busy at work. More updates to come soon. Stay tuned.

Bowling For Soup

The weekends just seemed to pass by really fast when you have errands and things to do, don't you agree? Oh well, after a rather tiring day of running up and down, dinner was rather random at this new place - Super Kitchen - over at the new Taipan area at USJ.

002

You'll probably recognize the main branch over at Batu Road that is famous for its 'chilli pan mee' - a noodle based dish that comes with anchovies. The special part of this serving is to actually add dry chilli, stir it up and savour the burn and taste it leaves in your mouth. Not my first time though.

Heard ShootFest was a blast as well. Too bad I can't make it due to some previous engagements that was scheduled in a long time ago. Here's a group photo of the turnout for Day One taken shamelessly from here.

001

An unconference for photographers and videographers alike, this year's theme was 'The Wedding' - meant for professionals, freelancers or anyone that is interested in wedding photography and videography. Guess I'll slot it in for next year if its on.

After dinner, me and the usuals met up for the long awaited bowling game that was supposed to happen last year. Seeing that all of us have no experience whatsoever in the game, we got our shoes and was ready to take on the alley.

003

We used the first game for practice and warm-up.

004

And this was our scores :

005006

We took the second game more seriously though :

007
008

And before calling it a day, David and I decided to go at it for the last time, man to man, ball to ball - okay that sounded wrong. You get the drift.

009

Check out a clip of us bowling (thanks to Kelz for the video and all pics) :

And this was the final score :

010

Not too bad eh? - bet there's tons of you out there that could have beaten me flat.

David blamed it on the tiring day he had at ShootFest. But succeeded nonetheless all the time in being a good sport when it comes to all things ballsy. Or ball games rather.

011

I smell a rematch coming very soon.

The N Is Here : Nokia N97 Launch

Just got back from the Nokia N97 launch at Mandarin Oriental with much thanks to the good people over at Text100. Went with the usuals and hang out for a bit outside before we were allowed in the room which was filled with colourful seats and cool N97 display stations. They even had a screen with the latest updates on Twitter for those who update with #n97kl.

n001

The web themed launch party also had cosplayers walking around - not too sure why they were there though - crowd filler perhaps. Each of us were given an empty tag to fill "the online you" up whether it was our Facebook, blog or Twitter names. Pretty cool if one had the same nickname for all things web like our friend, Aaron below :

n002

Dinner was served right after the welcoming speech and what nots giving us more time to mingle and play with the Nokia N97. Many logged on to their Twitter account and did the religious Twitpic-ing while others managed to catch up with friends and acquaintances from the industry. There were also two games and some prizes to be won later in the night.

n003
ST-Kim and Joshua-David took up the challenge to shred and bang skins.

A one-stop shop of applications, games, videos, podcasts, productivity tools, web services, music and much more, the Nokia N97 is truly a sweet bargain at RM2480. Not to mention it's touchscreen capabilities. Check out the full list of Nokia N97 features here, if you're interested.

n004
Mel-KY ready to rock.

Bringing the features and power of a mobile computer to a compact, pocketable package - I guess we can truly unleash the 'online' gene in us with the all new Nokia N97. With social networking being key for the phone, Nokia has once again redefine their classic slogan of connecting people.

n005
With Kelz, David, Jen, Aaron & Joshua.

Some pics by Joshua.

Do You Really Want To Know The Truth?

"You take the blue pill, the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill, you stay in Wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes." - Morpheus (The Matrix)

001

Which would you choose and why?
